BELMARTA AKITAS |
informationChoosing an Akita puppy is not a decision to be taken lightly. Over the years these are the questions most frequently asked us. We hope this will help you in deciding if the Akita is the dog for you
Q Do they loose lots of hair? Yes, twice a year, it's like a blizzard! shedding lasts about two weeks, some of my dogs also go off their food and seem to loose muscle tone, the good news is the rest of the time there is very little hair loss and a once weekly grooming is adequate. Q Are they easily housetrained? Yes, the Akita is an incredibly clean dog, by 8 weeks old we find the puppies have almost housetrained themselves. Q What is their temperament like? The Akita is a dominant dog with a strong personality, two Akitas of the same sex will not usually get on. We find them to be loyal and amusing companions, sometimes aloof with strangers outside, but always sociable and happy to greet visitors to our home. Q What about children? Akitas are very tolerant of children and make great family pets. However as with any large breed of dog young children should never be left unsupervised, we find our dogs go in a quiet corner when they have had enough of playtime and we always respect this. Q Are they easy to train? If you have lots of patience and a sense of humour, training an Akita can be great fun. Often Akitas are referred to as being stubborn, I prefer to think they learn very quickly and so are very easily bored. Obedience training is a must, sometimes training an Akita needs a slightly different approach, they do not respond well to constant yelling of commands or boring routines. I find if lots of praise and hugs are given when he gets it right and a loud NO when wrong, along with regular attendance at obedience classes, you will soon have a dog you can be proud of. It's up to you! We hope we have helped with your decision.
CONCLUSION:
We always keep in
touch with all our new owners, and over the years we have been pleased to
receive many letters and a constant supply of photographs. We are
always there if any help or advice is needed. Seeing and hearing how
the puppies are developing is one of the nicest things about breeding
Akitas, for we know that the puppies are happy and healthy. Perhaps
the new owners are turning their hobby into an obsession also! After
owning an Akita could you really own another breed.
